As AI continues to evolve, there is a growing argument that integrating emotions or at least an understanding of them into AI could greatly improve the quality of human-AI interactions. Emotions are central to human experience, and by enabling AI to recognise, understand, and respond to them, can we create systems that feel more natural, compassionate, and engaging? Let’s explore some of the key benefits:

1. Improved customer service

One of the most immediate applications of emotionally aware AI would be in customer service. Traditional chatbots can be efficient but often feel robotic and impersonal. However, if AI could recognise emotional cues such as frustration or confusion, it could respond with greater empathy, guiding customers towards solutions with a more human touch. Imagine a chatbot that doesn’t just process your query but understands when you’re frustrated and adjusts its responses to calm and reassure you.

2. Potential in mental health support

AI with emotional intelligence could also find its way into mental health support services, potentially providing an additional layer of interaction for those seeking assistance. Should AI systems be able to recognise signs of distress and respond in a way that acknowledges the user's emotional state? Could AI be used to ask questions to better understand the user’s needs and potentially direct individuals towards available resources? Imagine an AI teacher that not only knows the course material but also understands how you’re feeling during the learning process. If it senses frustration, confusion or boredom, could AI change its teaching approach, perhaps offering a break, simplifying explanations, or using humour to re-engage the student?

For learners with specific challenges like dyslexia or dyscalculia, could AI adapt its teaching strategies to better suit their needs, providing tools like text-to-speech, visual aids, or alternative methods for learning mathematical concepts?

If AI in education were to cater to individual learning styles and moods, rather than simply seeing data as true or false, could this help create an environment where students feel supported, understood, and motivated to learn?

Final thoughts: The future of emotional AI

AI with emotions could revolutionise industries and human interaction, but it also presents ethical and practical challenges. Should we strive for AI that genuinely feels, or is it enough to simulate empathy for better engagement? 

The emotions that AI would experience, however, would need to be unpredictable like human emotions or consequential, shaped by prior interactions. This introduces an additional layer of complexity, how would we ensure AI’s emotional responses are appropriate, and how might those responses evolve based on context and past exchanges? As AI continues to evolve, these debates will only grow more relevant.
